Job Title: Senior Systems Engineer

Location: Marlborough, Wiltshire

Salary: Up to £50,000 per annum + benefits

Type: Full-time, Permanent

About the Role

A respected and forward-thinking College in Marlborough is seeking a Senior Systems Engineer to lead the technical support and infrastructure function across the campus. This is a hands-on role providing 3rd line support, managing core systems, and ensuring a robust and secure IT infrastructure for staff and students.

You’ll play a key part in shaping the college’s technology roadmap, working closely with the Head of IT and supporting junior members of the team where necessary.

Key Responsibilities

Act as the escalation point for 3rd line support issues across servers, networking, and end-user environments.

Proactively monitor, maintain, and optimise the college’s on-prem and cloud-based infrastructure.

Administer Windows Server, Active Directory, Group Policy, and Microsoft 365 platforms.

Maintain and troubleshoot the network environment, including switches, firewalls, and wireless systems.

Ensure systems are secure, patched, and compliant with data protection regulations (GDPR).

Lead and implement infrastructure projects (e.g. server upgrades, network refreshes, cloud migrations).

Support virtualisation platforms (Hyper-V or VMware).

Liaise with third-party vendors and service providers when required.

Provide mentorship and technical guidance to junior IT staff.

Key Skills & Experience

Essential:

Proven experience in a 3rd line support or senior infrastructure role.

Strong knowledge of Windows Server 2016/2019/2022, Active Directory, DNS/DHCP.

Experience with Microsoft 365, Exchange Online, Azure AD, and Intune.

Solid networking experience – VLANs, firewalls (e.g. Sophos, Cisco), switches, and Wi-Fi management.

Familiarity with virtualisation technologies – preferably Hyper-V or VMware.

Backup and recovery systems (e.g. Veeam, Altaro).

Excellent troubleshooting and documentation skills.
Desirable:

Experience working within an educational environment.

Knowledge of ITIL principles or formal certification.

Exposure to scripting (PowerShell) for automation.

Experience managing Google Workspace (bonus).
