Net Consulting is seeking an experienced and proactive 3rd Line Infrastructure Engineer to support and enhance enterprise infrastructure across secure environments. This role is ideal for professionals with deep technical expertise in container orchestration, networking, virtualisation, and enterprise monitoring and security platforms.

Primarily based in Cardiff, with occasional travel to other customer locations as required. You will be responsible for resolving complex infrastructure issues, mentoring junior engineers, and escalating critical matters to the Lead 3rd Line Engineer. You will work across technologies including Kubernetes, OpenShift, Dell servers, Cisco and Juniper networking, SAN, VMware, and security appliances such as Nexor data diodes and Endace packet probes.

You must be eligible for UK Security Check (SC) clearance, with the potential to progress to Developed Vetting (DV) clearance.

Responsibilities

  • Provide advanced 3rd line support for:

    • Kubernetes, K3s, OpenShift, Padman, Rancher

    • Dell servers, Cisco firewalls, Juniper and Cisco switches

    • Brocade fabric switches, SAN storage, VMware, VDI

    • SolarWinds, Endace packet probes, Gigamon, Nexor data diodes

    • ESXi and KVM Hypervisors

    • Windows Server OS

    • RedHat Enterprise Linux OS

      Lead the resolution of complex incidents and problems escalated from Level 2

      Escalate unresolved or critical issues to the Lead 3rd Line Engineer, providing detailed diagnostics and documentation

      Collaborate with the Lead 3rd Line Engineer on infrastructure design, upgrades, and strategic improvements

      Mentor and support Level 1 and 2 engineers, promoting knowledge sharing and skills development

      Maintain system performance, availability, and security across all supported platforms

      Contribute to automation, scripting, and infrastructure-as-code initiatives

      Participate in change management, patching, and configuration control processes

      Maintain accurate technical documentation and support records

      Participate in on-call rotations and respond to high-priority incidents

      Skills & Experience

      Essential

      Proven experience in a 3rd line infrastructure support or systems engineering role

  • Strong hands-on experience with:

    • Container platforms: Kubernetes, OpenShift, K3s, Podman, Rancher

    • Networking: Cisco firewalls/switches, Juniper switches, Brocade fabrics

    • Storage & Virtualisation: SAN, VMware ESXi, VDI

    • Monitoring & Security: SolarWinds, Endace, Gigamon, Nexor

    • Operating Systems: Windows Server, Linux

      Strong diagnostic and troubleshooting skills across complex systems

      Experience in secure environments and working with classified systems

      Excellent communication skills for liaising with the Lead Engineer and wider teams

      Eligible for UK SC clearance

      Full UK Driving Licences

      Desirable

  • Experience with infrastructure automation (e.g., Ansible, Terraform)

  • Scripting skills (e.g., PowerShell, Bash, Python)

  • KVM Hypervisor experience

  • Familiarity with ITIL processes and service management

  • Exposure to MOD or defence sector environment
