Would you like to help implement innovative cloud computing solutions and solve the world's most complex technical problems? Do you have a deep passion and desire to engineer and operate the world's largest cloud computing infrastructure to provide a better world for future generations?

Amazon Web Services (AWS) builds and operates some of the largest internet infrastructure on the planet; providing companies of all sizes with an infrastructure web services platform in the cloud. With AWS, customers provision compute power, storage, database, and other cloud resources as their business demands them. To meet the growing demand for AWS Services around the globe, we need exceptionally motivated people who are driven by learning and innovation.

If you join us, you'll be part of a world-class team in a dynamic environment that has the entrepreneurial feel of a start-up. This is an opportunity to operate and engineer systems on a massive scale, and to gain world class experience in cloud computing. You'll be surrounded by people who are passionate about cloud computing, believe that first class service is critical to customer success, and are committed to improvement.

We are looking for a Systems Development Manager to build a new team and own the future growth of our central London based team. A successful Systems Development Manager in AWS will do much more than lead teams of Engineers in launching new features, and triaging problems. If you join us, you will set the standard for automation and working at scale, dive deep into technical issues, and work diligently to improve the customer experience. You would take advantage of the SRE model of service delivery, and you are excited to solve problems of scale through automation. You are happiest when you are working with empowered, world-class engineers to meet world-class challenges. Finally, with your strong ownership bias, you have an infectious desire to continually improve how things are done.

By working together on behalf of our customers, we are building the future, one innovative product, service, and idea at a time. Are you ready to embrace the challenge? Come build the future with us.

Key job responsibilities

WHAT DOES A SYSTEM DEVELOPMENT MANAGER DO AT AMAZON?

On a typical day your team might dive deep into understanding the root cause of customer issue, investigate why a metric is trending the wrong way, consult with top engineers at Amazon, or discuss radical new approaches to automate operational issues.

Our systems development managers manage a team of engineers that own a large portion of architecture with considerable impact. You will set the strategic direction of your team, providing the larger picture, long-term perspective.

You support the adoption of high quality engineering practices, providing your engineers with the necessary support to take responsibility for systems end-to-end.

You are strategic about engineer growth and help your engineers learn how to make smart trade-offs.

Your team will spend time:

• Automating the world's most advanced cloud computing infrastructure
• Simplifying and reinventing systems, processes, and tools to make things better for our customers
• Building unique solutions to our customers’ technical problems
• Providing guidance on system architecture and recommending solutions in alignment with systems engineering best practices
• Investigating and developing new ways to improve operations when a strategy is not defined.
• Mentoring, hiring and developing team members
• Studying and learning from industry recognised Amazon senior and principal engineers.
• Identifying, troubleshooting and fixing root causes to problems.

We own our services and believe in making out-of-hours support as painless as possible.
