SRE Engineer – Birmingham, Flexible hybrid working | Full-Time / Permanent

Competitive salary + bonus and excellent benefits including healthcare, wellbeing support, 27 days' annual leave plus bank holidays, life insurance and more.

We're looking for a proactive Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) Engineer to join the digital & technology team at Compass Group UK & Ireland - a global leader in food services. You play a key role in this innovative team helping ensure our digital products and platforms are reliable, resilient and high-performing.

Working across engineering, platform and service operations teams, you'll champion SRE best practices, improve observability, automate operational processes and help drive the transition from reactive support to proactive, engineering-led reliability.

If you're passionate about service resilience, automation and continuous improvement, we'd love to hear from you.

Compass Digital & Technology is where ideas turn into possibilities.

We’re the technology team behind Compass Group UK&I, part of Compass Group, one of the world’s largest hospitality businesses. We’re shaping the next generation of products, platforms and experiences for Compass Group, harnessing AI to create competitive advantage and accelerate growth.

We create, manage and deploy technology which supports our operators, clients and guests. From everyday IT support to enterprise-scale cloud engineering, cybersecurity, mobile ordering and guest-facing experiences, our work reaches across the business and into the daily lives of millions of people.

But D&T is about more than technology. It’s a place to be curious, challenge what’s possible and turn great ideas into real outcomes. A place where talented people collaborate, experiment, learn and make an impact at scale.

We own it from idea to outcome. We challenge what’s possible. And together, we’re creating better solutions, every day.

SRE Engineer – The role

  • Implement Service Level Objectives (SLOs), Service Level Indicators (SLIs), error budgets and service health measures for critical services.
  • Build and maintain observability capabilities including monitoring, logging, tracing, dashboards and alerting frameworks.
  • Support production readiness reviews, resilience testing, capacity planning and operational acceptance activities.
  • Automate repetitive operational tasks and reduce manual effort across supported services.
  • Contribute to incident response, post-incident reviews and reliability improvement initiatives.
  • Collaborate with Platform Engineering and Software Engineering teams to embed reliability and operability into delivery pipelines.
  • Improve alert quality by reducing noise, optimising thresholds and linking alerts to actionable runbooks.
  • Support the adoption of AIOps and anomaly detection capabilities to improve service restoration and predictive operations.
  • Help define reliability standards, operational controls and best practices across the technology estate.

What we're looking for

  • Experience in operations, software engineering, cloud engineering, platform engineering or reliability engineering.
  • Good understanding of monitoring, logging, tracing, automation, incident management and capacity planning.
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to identify trends, investigate root causes and drive service improvements.
  • Experience creating scripts, automations or tooling to improve operational efficiency and reliability.
  • Ability to work effectively across technical, operational and service management teams.
  • Understanding of Site Reliability Engineering principles, service resilience and operational excellence.
  • Practical knowledge of ITIL4 service operations practices.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills with a continuous improvement mindset.

What you'll get in return

  • Competitive salary with bonus and full company benefits
  • 27 days' annual leave plus bank holidays, your birthday off, and a holiday purchase scheme
  • Healthcare & wellbeing: Aviva Digicare, Medicash (dental, optical, therapy treatments)
  • Mental health support: 24/7 Employee Assistance Programme
  • Family benefits: Enhanced maternity, paternity, and adoption leave, 2 days' additional leave after returning from maternity leave, day off for your baby's first birthday, enhanced family leave
  • Perks & discounts: Shopping, entertainment and travel discounts, 20% off Nuffield Health and 10% off PureGym memberships
  • Financial wellbeing: Pension scheme, Life Assurance, preferred rates on salary finance products
  • Development opportunities: Professional subscriptions, ongoing training and structured career pathways
