Network Security Engineer

Location: Barnsley (Hybrid/On-Site)
Job Type: Fixed-Term Contract (6 Months)

Overview

We are looking for an experienced Network Security Engineer to join our team on an initial 6-month fixed-term contract. This role will be responsible for maintaining, securing and optimising the organisation's network and security infrastructure, ensuring high levels of availability, compliance and protection against cyber threats.

The successful candidate will have strong hands-on experience across Cisco networking, firewall technologies, network security platforms and security operations, with the ability to support both BAU activities and project-based initiatives.

Key Responsibilities
  • Monitor, maintain and optimise network and security infrastructure using tools such as SolarWinds.

  • Analyse logs, identify security threats and proactively resolve network and security issues.

  • Administer and support Cisco ISE, including policy management, posture compliance, certificate renewals and remediation activities.

  • Monitor compliance across endpoint and network security solutions.

  • Configure, maintain and support anti-malware, device control and Data Loss Prevention (DLP) technologies.

  • Support incident response activities, security investigations and remediation of security breaches.

  • Maintain backup and recovery procedures for network and security systems.

  • Configure, manage and troubleshoot next-generation firewalls including Palo Alto, Fortinet, Check Point, Cisco ASA and Cisco Firepower.

  • Administer Cisco Firepower Management Centre (FMC) and Firepower Threat Defence (FTD).

  • Manage firewall rule sets, NAT policies, VPN connectivity and security policies.

  • Configure and support IPsec and SSL VPN solutions for remote access and site-to-site connectivity.

  • Implement and maintain security controls for internet-facing services and infrastructure.

  • Monitor network performance and availability, ensuring maximum uptime.

  • Support routing, switching and wireless network environments.

  • Collaborate with infrastructure, networking and security teams to improve security posture and operational effectiveness.

  • Produce technical documentation and contribute to continuous improvement initiatives.

Required Skills & Experience
  • 8+ years' experience in Network Engineering and Network Security roles.

  • Strong hands-on experience with Cisco networking technologies.

  • Expert knowledge of routing protocols including BGP, OSPF and EIGRP.

  • Strong understanding of TCP/IP, DHCP, DNS, VLANs, VPNs and network troubleshooting.

  • Experience supporting Cisco Catalyst 9500 switches.

  • Strong experience with Cisco Meraki environments.

  • Extensive experience configuring and supporting Palo Alto firewalls.

  • Strong knowledge of Palo Alto Panorama administration.

  • Experience with Fortinet technologies including FortiGate, FortiManager and FortiAnalyzer.

  • Experience configuring and supporting Check Point, Cisco ASA and Cisco Firepower solutions.

  • Strong understanding of firewall security policies, NAT, App-ID, User-ID, GlobalProtect and WildFire.

  • Experience with IDS, IPS, DLP, DDoS mitigation and security monitoring technologies.

  • Strong experience supporting Cisco ISE and posture compliance environments.

  • Experience with security incident response and vulnerability remediation.

  • Strong troubleshooting and analytical skills.

  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management abilities.

Desirable Experience
  • Relevant certifications such as CCNP, CCIE, PCNSE, NSE4/NSE7, CISSP or equivalent.

  • Experience within enterprise or highly regulated environments.

  • Knowledge of security frameworks and compliance standards.

  • Experience supporting hybrid cloud networking and security environments.
