If you're an experienced IT infrastructure professional who enjoys improving systems rather than simply keeping the lights on, this is an opportunity to help shape an IT function that's being built for the future.

IT Infrastructure Manager
Birmingham
£55,000 - £60,000
Hybrid - 3 days in the office, 2 days from home

Technology plays a critical role in keeping a freight rail operation moving. As the business continues to grow through acquisition, it's investing in its IT function to build a stronger infrastructure team capable of supporting an expanding organisation.

This is an opportunity to take ownership of the infrastructure estate, improve resilience, modernise services and help shape the technology roadmap for the future. You'll work across networks, cloud platforms, servers and security, leading infrastructure projects while ensuring the day-to-day environment remains stable, secure and reliable.
If you enjoy combining hands-on technical expertise with project delivery and want the opportunity to influence how an IT infrastructure evolves, this role offers genuine scope to make an impact.

What you'll be doing

You'll be responsible for maintaining and improving the organisation's infrastructure, ensuring critical services remain available while identifying opportunities to strengthen performance, resilience and security.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Managing and supporting the existing IT infrastructure across multiple technologies.
  • Monitoring systems proactively to identify and resolve issues before they affect the business.
  • Delivering infrastructure projects on time and within budget.
  • Acting as the technical lead on infrastructure and business change initiatives.
  • Working closely with internal teams and third-party suppliers to resolve technical issues.
  • Maintaining and improving cloud, server, network and security platforms.
  • Identifying new technologies that could improve service, resilience or security.
  • Creating and maintaining clear technical documentation.
  • Supporting compliance with IT policies, governance and relevant legislation.
  • Developing and maintaining the infrastructure roadmap as the organisation continues to grow.

What you'll bring

Essential

  • Strong experience managing Microsoft infrastructure environments.
  • Experience with Microsoft Azure and Microsoft 365.
  • Solid networking knowledge covering LAN, WAN, Wi-Fi and SD-WAN technologies.
  • Experience implementing and managing IT security solutions.
  • A track record of delivering infrastructure projects and supporting business change.
  • The ability to explain technical concepts clearly to non-technical colleagues.
  • Strong troubleshooting, organisational and prioritisation skills.
  • Excellent stakeholder management and communication skills.

Desirable

  • Experience writing technical documentation.
  • Experience working within a regulated or operational environment such as transport, logistics, manufacturing or infrastructure.
  • Experience integrating multiple business systems following organisational growth or acquisitions.

What's on offer

  • Hybrid working (3 days in the Birmingham office, 2 days from home).
  • 25 days' annual leave plus bank holidays.
  • Company pension and life assurance.
  • Employee discounts and Cycle to Work scheme.
  • Ongoing training and career development.
  • Employee Assistance Programme and wellbeing support.
