About the Company
A well-established engineering business based in North Wales is seeking a Software Engineer to join its multidisciplinary engineering team. The company designs, develops, and manufactures specialist instrumentation and analytical technologies used in demanding scientific and technical environments.

This role sits at the core of a complex product stack, delivering desktop-installed software that interfaces directly with highly specialised hardware and data acquisition systems. While modern web technologies are used within the application stack, the primary challenges lie in back-end logic, data handling, system integration, and reliability.

The Role
You will contribute to the design, development, testing, and maintenance of robust software systems used to control, acquire, process, and present scientific data. The software acts as the primary interface between advanced measurement hardware and its users, requiring dependable real-time behaviour, clear presentation of complex data, and strong engineering discipline.

This position suits a capable, technically curious engineer, from an early-career developer through to a mid to senior-level engineer, who is comfortable learning domain-specific systems and working closely with hardware, firmware, and scientific colleagues.

Key Responsibilities

Design, develop, and maintain desktop-based software supporting data acquisition, processing, and analysis
Contribute to back-end logic, data handling, and system integration
Use Git with established branching and merge strategies
Maintain build and technical documentation
Write and maintain unit tests for critical code paths
Support CI/CD pipelines where appropriate
Track and resolve issues using tools such as GitHub Issues or Jira
Evaluate and integrate open-source libraries, ensuring appropriate licensing
Collaborate closely with hardware, firmware, and scientific engineering teams
Contribute ideas and improvements through technical reviews
Ensure all design and documentation complies with ISO 9001 standards
Skills & Experience

Experience with technologies such as Node.js, Express, Vue.js and Electron
Strong programming fundamentals and a solid understanding of software engineering principles
Experience building or maintaining desktop applications or system-focused software
Exposure to back-end or data-driven development
Comfortable working with structured data, real-time systems, or computation-heavy logic
Practical experience using Git and collaborative development workflows
Ability to learn new domains and work effectively within a small engineering team
Clear communicator, able to explain technical concepts to non-software specialists
Desirable

Background or strong interest in geophysics, geology, physics, engineering, or applied science
Experience with scientific instruments, test equipment, or data acquisition systems
Exposure to numerical methods, signal processing, or scientific data analysis
Experience working in multidisciplinary engineering teams (hardware, firmware, R&D)
Mentoring, knowledge sharing, or willingness to support junior colleagues
Benefits

Annual performance-based bonus
Private healthcare
Company pension contributions
Hybrid working model
Interview Process

Informal initial discussion with the Software Engineering Manager
Technical interview and discussion with the Software Lead

What Hiring Managers Look for First in Cloud Computing Job Applications (UK Guide)

anding a job in cloud computing can be highly competitive — especially in the UK market where demand far outpaces supply in many segments. Whether you’re aiming for roles in Cloud Engineering, DevOps, Site Reliability, Cloud Architecture, Security, Data/Analytics, or Platform Operations, hiring managers screen applications quickly and with specific priorities in mind. Hiring managers don’t read every detail at first; they scan for critical signals in the first 10–20 seconds. These early signals determine whether your CV gets read more closely, whether your LinkedIn profile gets clicked, and whether you’re invited to interview. This guide breaks down, in practical terms, exactly what hiring managers look for first in cloud computing applications — and what you should emphasise in your CV, cover letter and portfolio to stand out on www.cloudcomputingjobs.co.uk .

The Skills Gap in Cloud Computing Jobs: What Universities Aren’t Teaching

Cloud computing underpins almost every modern digital service. From financial systems and healthcare platforms to AI, e-commerce, government infrastructure and cybersecurity, the cloud is now the default operating environment for UK organisations. Demand for cloud professionals has grown rapidly, with roles spanning architecture, engineering, security, DevOps, platform operations and cost optimisation. Salaries remain high, and vacancies remain stubbornly difficult to fill. Yet despite a growing number of graduates with computer science, IT and software engineering degrees, employers across the UK report a persistent problem: Too many candidates are not job-ready for real cloud computing roles. This is not a question of intelligence or motivation. It is a structural skills gap between what universities teach and what cloud jobs actually require. This article explores that gap in depth: what universities do well, what they consistently miss, why the gap exists, what employers genuinely want, and how jobseekers can bridge the divide to build sustainable careers in cloud computing.
