Job Purpose:

The Port Operative plays a key role in the day-to-day functioning of a port, supporting the efficient and safe loading, unloading, and handling of cargo, containers, and vessels. This role ensures smooth operational flow while adhering to all safety and compliance standards.

Key Responsibilities:

Cargo Handling: Load and unload cargo (including containers, bulk materials, and vehicles) from ships, trucks, and other transportation methods using appropriate equipment (cranes, forklifts, etc.).
Equipment Operation: Safely operate machinery such as forklifts, reach stackers, cranes, and other port equipment.
Vessel Support: Assist with vessel mooring/unmooring, securing lines, and preparing berths.
Inspections: Conduct visual inspections of cargo and equipment to ensure safety and report any damages or irregularities.
Documentation: Maintain accurate records of cargo movements and complete required documentation.
Health & Safety: Adhere to port and maritime safety standards, including the use of PPE and compliance with all risk assessments and safety procedures.
Teamwork: Collaborate with other port staff, shipping agents, customs officials, and hauliers to ensure operational efficiency.
Site Maintenance: Help maintain cleanliness and organization of the port yard and working areas.

Skills and Qualifications:

Essential:

Physically fit and able to work in outdoor environments and in varying weather conditions.
Good understanding of health and safety practices.
Ability to follow instructions and work independently or in a team.
Flexible approach to shift work, including night shifts, weekends, and holidays.
Full UK Driving Licence.Desirable:

Previous experience working in a port, dock, or logistics environment.
Valid certifications for forklift, crane, or other relevant machinery.
Basic knowledge of shipping and cargo handling procedures.

Working Conditions:

Outdoor work environment.
Shift-based schedule, including night and weekend work.
12 hour shifts.
May involve working at heights or near water.s93
