Role: System/ DevOps Engineer

Duration: 6 Months (extension options)

Location: Plymouth (Remote 1 day a month on-site)

Rate: £550 per day (umbrella)

Our client, a forward-thinking organisation, is looking for a passionate and skilled DevOps Engineer to join their dynamic Systems Engineering team. Reporting to the Head of Systems Engineering, you will play a vital role in designing, implementing, and managing both cloud and on-premise infrastructures, tooling, and systems that support our development teams.

Key Responsibilities:

Infrastructure Design & Deployment: Architect and deploy scalable, high-performance systems that align with the organisation's long-term operational and business objectives.

Performance Monitoring: Continuously monitor, analyse, and enhance the reliability of large-scale distributed systems to ensure seamless uptime and operational efficiency.

Automation Solutions: Develop automation solutions for configuration management, system provisioning, and deployment, significantly streamlining operations and minimising manual processes.

Security Compliance: Implement and maintain robust security protocols, ensuring that systems comply with regulatory standards and best practises, including data encryption, access control, and vulnerability management.

Incident Management: Lead efforts in resolving system outages or performance degradation, conduct root cause analysis, and implement preventive measures to mitigate future risks.

Collaboration: Work closely with cross-functional teams, including software development, DevOps, and IT operations, to integrate solutions, troubleshoot issues, and enhance overall system performance.

Capacity Planning: analyse current system capacities and strategize for future growth, ensuring infrastructure readiness to accommodate increased loads and scaling needs.

Qualifications:

Technical Expertise: Strong knowledge of cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP), containerisation technologies, automation and orchestration tools. Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines and DevOps methodologies is essential.

Scripting Proficiency: Proficiency in scripting/programming languages such as Python, Bash, or PowerShell.

Systems Knowledge: Deep understanding of large-scale distributed systems, network architectures, storage solutions, and compute resource management.

Problem Solving: Proven ability to troubleshoot complex system issues, perform root cause analysis, and apply timely solutions.

Security Awareness: Expertise in security frameworks and compliance standards (e.g., ISO27001, NIST, GDPR) and best practises for securing large-scale infrastructure.

Monitoring Tools: Proficiency with monitoring and logging tools (e.g., Splunk, Grafana, ELK stack).

Interpersonal Skills: Strong communication skills, with the ability to convey technical information clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

Experience: Years in a systems engineering role, focusing on managing and scaling systems in cloud or hybrid environments.

Analytical Mindset: Strong analytical skills to synthesise data and insights into actionable strategies, addressing challenges creatively and effectively.
