We're on the lookout for a collaborative and inspiring Backend Development Lead to guide and support our talented backend engineering teams on an exciting journey of innovation and growth.

You'll report directly to the Head of Engineering and play a central role in helping our engineers thrive, both technically and personally. If you're a natural leader who thrives on fostering collaboration, championing innovation, and empowering others.

Lead and Inspire: Support and guide multiple teams of passionate backend engineers. Create a space where people feel safe to innovate, supported to grow, and motivated to do their best work. Lead with empathy and foster a high-performing, inclusive engineering culture.

Strategic Vision: Shape the long-term direction of backend engineering at E.ON Next. You'll help align our work with the broader technology strategy, enterprise architecture, and the needs of our customers and business.

Delivery Champion: Own the outcomes. Work closely with Product Managers and stakeholders to deliver meaningful, high-quality solutions that contribute to our shared goals and OKRs. You're a partner in progress.

Technical Excellence: Uphold and promote engineering best practices. Ensure our solutions are scalable, maintainable, and future-ready while nurturing a culture of continuous improvement.

Empowerment Advocate: Encourage your teams to take initiative and own their work. Provide guidance and support without micromanaging and trusting your engineers to make smart decisions.

Growth Facilitator: Invest in the development of your people. From mentoring to creating learning opportunities, you'll help every engineer reach their full potential.

Collaboration Catalyst: Build strong, trusting relationships across our Digital Technology teams and the broader E.ON business. You'll play a key role in ensuring smooth collaboration across our UK business and the E.ON Group.

Hands-on Leader: While leadership will be your primary focus, you'll still have the chance to stay connected to the tech and contributing when needed and keeping your skills sharp.

Leadership Expertise: You've led and supported multiple engineering teams (up to 35 FTEs) and are passionate about helping people succeed. You foster high performance through trust, communication, and empowerment.

Technical Foundation: You have a strong technical background in backend development ideally with Python and AWS. You understand the complexities of scalable, secure systems. Experience with PCI Compliance, AI, or Telephony platforms is a big plus.

Strategic Thinker: You think beyond the code. You're comfortable contributing to long-term tech strategies that balance innovation, user needs, and business outcomes.

Delivery Focus: You've successfully delivered robust, impactful backend solutions and know how to balance quality with agility.

Agile & DevOps Advocate: You embrace agile principles and DevOps practices. "Fail fast, learn faster" is part of your mindset, and you're always looking for ways to iterate and improve.

Communication & Collaboration: You communicate clearly and kindly. You're great at listening, giving feedback, and building trusted relationships across all levels of the business.

Mentorship & Coaching: You love seeing others succeed. You take pride in mentoring engineers, guiding their growth, and celebrating their wins.

It would be great if you had:

Experience working with microservices and serverless technologies.

Familiarity with event driven architectures.

Exposure to or understanding of compliance driven environments like PCI.

A passion for ethical, innovative technology and helping shape the future of energy.

Competitive salary

Location - London - E.ON Next, 47-53 Charterhouse Street, Farringdon, London, EC1M 6PB with travel to our other sites when required.

Working environment: Flexible hybrid working - a blend of in the office and home working.

26 days holiday plus bank holidays each year - this includes a guaranteed day off for your birthday if you want it.

Generous pension scheme (you contribute 5%, we contribute 6%, increasing to 10% after 2 years).
