We're looking for a Senior Solutions Engineer to play a pivotal role in shaping the future of DevOps and Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) within our Core Solutions team. This is a high-impact, hands-on leadership role where you'll blend technical expertise with strategic influence—mentoring a globally distributed team and driving innovation across automation, observability, and cloud infrastructure. You'll have the opportunity to lead change, embed best practices, and ensure our platforms remain scalable, reliable, and future-ready.

We are Cambridge University Press & Assessment, a world-leading academic publisher and assessment organisation and a proud part of the University of Cambridge.

    About the Role

The purpose of this role is to set the strategic direction for SRE and DevOps capabilities across Core Solutions, while remaining hands-on to deliver key objectives. You'll oversee software infrastructure, CI/CD pipelines, observability solutions, and tooling to ensure efficient, reliable, and scalable code delivery and operational response processes. This role is critical in enabling us to deliver high-quality digital solutions at scale, embedding a culture of automation, measurement, and continuous improvement. It plays a key part in ensuring our platforms remain robust, cost-effective, and future-focused.

As a core member of our engineering team, you will:

  • Lead and coach the Core Solutions DevOps team, embedding SRE and DevOps principles across delivery streams.

  • Own the roadmap and continuous improvement of our tools, infrastructure, and practices.

  • Optimize cloud hosting and AWS service usage, driving FinOps awareness and accountability across development teams.

  • Translate technical roadmaps into measurable business outcomes.

  • Collaborate with stakeholders, architects, and service managers to align on strategy and ensure smooth delivery of change.

  • Champion improvements by staying engaged with the global DevOps and SRE community.

    About you

We're seeking an enthusiastic and technically skilled leader with deep expertise in cloud infrastructure, CI/CD, and DevOps tooling.

    You'll bring:

  • Proven hands-on experience with CI/CD pipelines, infrastructure as code, and cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, or GCP)

  • Strong knowledge of monitoring, observability, and cloud security best practices

  • Experience with containerization and orchestration tools such as Docker and Kubernetes

  • Significant experience in software engineering, technical delivery, or solution architecture

  • A track record of successfully leading teams that deliver mission-critical services

  • Excellent stakeholder engagement skills and the ability to influence at all levels of the organization

  • A balanced approach to governance and delivery, supported by strong business acumen

  • A passion for enabling and developing others, and for fostering a high-performance culture

This is an exciting opportunity for someone driven by technical leadership, innovation, and the desire to make a meaningful impact in an organization that blends academic excellence with global reach.

With this widespread adoption comes a soaring demand for professionals who can design, deploy, and manage cloud solutions securely and efficiently. The challenge? Cloud technologies evolve rapidly, and the skills employers ask for today may look very different from those in demand even a few years ago. By reviewing job postings on LinkedIn and Indeed, we can pinpoint the cloud computing skills most frequently requested in the UK market. The Future of Cloud Computing Jobs: Careers That Don’t Exist Yet

Cloud computing has become the foundation of the digital age. It powers the apps on our phones, the data that businesses rely on, and the innovation that fuels artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, and smart cities. What started as a way to rent storage and computing power has now become a vast, complex ecosystem of interconnected services. In the UK, the cloud computing sector is booming. London is one of the biggest financial hubs in the world, with banks and fintech firms running much of their infrastructure in the cloud. Healthcare providers, the public sector, and retailers rely heavily on cloud solutions for efficiency and scalability. Meanwhile, edge computing, sovereign clouds, and the integration of artificial intelligence are pushing the boundaries of what the cloud can achieve. Yet, despite its maturity, we are still only at the beginning of cloud computing’s journey. Much like the internet in the late 1990s, the cloud is set to evolve in ways we cannot yet fully imagine. The most exciting and influential cloud jobs of the future don’t even exist today. This article explores why cloud computing will create new careers, what those roles might look like, how today’s jobs will evolve, and why the UK is in a strong position to lead. Finally, it provides practical guidance on how professionals can prepare for these opportunities.
