Role Overview

An Overhead Crane Operator is responsible for safely operating overhead cranes (also called bridge cranes or gantry cranes) to lift, move, and position heavy materials or equipment. They work in warehouses, factories, shipyards, and construction sites, ensuring efficient and hazard-free material handling.

Key Responsibilities

Crane Operation:

Operate overhead cranes via pendant controls, radio remote, or cabin.

*

Lift, transport, and position loads (e.g., steel beams, machinery, containers) as per instructions.

*

Ensure precise alignment and placement of materials.

Safety Inspections:

Conduct pre-operational checks (e.g., brakes, hooks, wires, limit switches).

*

Report equipment defects or malfunctions to supervisors.

*

Follow LOLER (Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998) guidelines.

Load Management:

Calculate load weights and ensure they do not exceed crane capacity.

*

Secure loads using slings, chains, or magnets, adhering to safe working practices.

*

Maintenance Support:

*

Assist with routine crane maintenance (e.g., lubrication, replacing worn parts).

*

Work with engineers to troubleshoot technical issues.

Documentation:

Log daily activities, load details, and safety checks.

*

Complete risk assessments and method statements (RAMS).

Skills and Qualifications

1.

Mandatory Certifications:

CPCS (Construction Plant Competence Scheme) or NPORS (National Plant Operators Registration Scheme) card for overhead crane operation.

*

CSCS Card (Construction Skills Certification Scheme) – required for most UK construction sites.

*

Slinger/Signaller certification (desirable for coordinating lifts).

2.

Experience:

Proven experience operating overhead cranes (e.g., electric, gantry, or bridge cranes).

*

Familiarity with load charts, crane capacities, and lifting plans.

3.

Technical Knowledge:

Understanding of PUWER (Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998) and LOLER.

Basic mechanical skills for minor repairs or adjustments
